Message from the Dean

Dear Students,
We are a little more than one month from the start of classes for the fall 2009 semester. For many of you, this time will be spent working in order to save funds that will contribute to costs to attend NSU. I commend each of you for your efforts to pursue and complete your bachelor’s degree (especially in challenging economic times).
Hopefully, the experiences you have in these jobs will also contribute to your post-degree professional identity. Many undergraduate students work—at least part time—during the school year. It is very good to see students seeking work settings that have relevance to personal and professional goals.
That said, I hope that you can break away from work—and studies—to find time to reflect on some of the larger issues facing our communities. Attention to current events, of your neighborhood or the world, matters a great deal in your own success. Solutions to current problems (as well as enhancements to quality of life) depend on the work that you and your classmates will do in the future. Your awareness of and attention to these events makes you more engaged, and more valuable to graduate schools and employers.
On a more practical note, please remember to register for your desired classes before Friday, August 14, in order to avoid the university's late-registration fee ($100). As you may know, the college's academic advisors are available year-round to answer any questions you may have about registration or to assist you in the enrollment process.
Now is also a great time to research the various scholarship opportunities available to help you finance your college education. The college is offering a scholarship and a grant right now, with applications due by July 24, 2009 (see below). Also remember to check the college's Web site regularly for more opportunities, as well as the Student Financial Success page.
Best wishes for the fall, and enjoy the rest of your summer!
Sincerely,
Don Rosenblum, Ph.D.
Dean, Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences

Sing with the Bossa Nova Chorale!
Do you love to sing? Would you like to sing and meet new people at the same time?
Well, the Bossa Nova Chorale is looking for a few good voices!
The Bossa Nova chorale is the premier vocal ensemble of the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences Division of Performing and Visual Arts. It is composed of talented, aspiring vocalists who sing a wide repertoire of songs, from spirituals and vocal jazz charts to choral music spanning the last millennium. Opportunities to shine as a soloist are also available.
Membership in the Bossa Nova Chorale is open each semester to all NSU students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty, and staff. Becoming a part of the chorale is a great way to meet new people, learn new music, and develop your musical skills. Undergraduate students may also gain academic credit for their participation in the group by registering for MUSC 3300, section DA1 (1 credit). Chorale performances are scheduled throughout the academic year.
Rehearsals for the Bossa Nova Chorale will be held each Tuesday during the fall 2009 semester, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Don Taft University Center, room 310 (part of the college’s Performing and Visual Arts Wing).
For more information and/or to become a member of the Bossa Nova Chorale, contact the ensemble's director, Jennifer Donelson, D.M.A., at (954) 262-7610. The deadline to sign up for the fall 2009 semester is Tuesday, September 1, 2009.
The Bossa Nova Chorale looks forward to hearing you!
