Division of Humanities
Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences

The history program, within the college's Division of Humanities, is composed of a variety of special topics courses focusing on issues of current importance, such as the America and Terrorism course and a course studying genocide. Some of the additional unique courses that have been offered at NSU through the major include: Origins of the Cold War, The Holocaust, The Great Depression, The Vietnam War, and Modern Middle East.

The history program utilizes lecture, discussion, and seminar formats best suited for the subject matter of each individual course, insuring that each history student at NSU receives the advantage of individual attention from faculty on coursework.

Thinking Ahead

The study of history is timeless. Earning a history degree is effective preparation for any field in which precise understanding, analysis, and interpretation are important. Therefore, many career paths exist for history majors. The kinds of critical reasoning and writing abilities that historical study promotes are invaluable in numerous professions.

Some fields in which history majors find jobs include

  • law
  • education
  • politics
  • government agencies
  • museum administration
  • journalism and media
  • non-profit organizations
  • research

The successful history graduate can also confidently pursue graduate school or seek certification to become a secondary school teacher, a process made easier than ever by NSU's education department and Broward County's alternative certification program.
